Momentus well received at the international research conference ItAIS 2006, in Milan, Italy

Momentus received positive reactions at the international research conference ”ItAIS 2006: Conference on Information Systems and People: Implementing Information Technology in the Workplace”. This conference was held at the leading Italian business university, Universita Bocconi, in Milan, 26th – 27th October 2006. Momentus representatives presented a set of proposals central for successful implementation of information systems in organizations, conducted in an organization-driven manner rather than in a technology-driven way.

The conference is a unique European gathering of researchers and practitioners for exchange of knowledge and experiences needed for implementation of modern Information Systems (IS) and their Information Technology (IT). In contrast with several other conferences, where the focus is put on an IT driven deployment of IS:es, the starting point here was the organization with their people, where the opportunities and needs are supposed to drive the organizational change.

In its aspiration to support their customers with the execution of successful organizational changes, that deliver concrete results, Momentus has established its Research and Development operations (R&D). This aims to generate practical recommendations and tools for the support of organizational development. The development of these tools is conducted by Momentus’ consultants, in collaboration with researches at universities in Sweden and elsewhere. This development is guides by a plan that is formulated in cooperation between Momentus’ senior team and an advisory board constituted by senior and recognized researchers at universities. The result from these R&D operations is presented in the form of “Momentus White Paper” and “Momentus Research Paper”, where the primer describes managerial tools ready for practical use, while the latter describes characteristics of such tools that are under development.

At the Milano-conference, a Momentus Research Paper was presented jointly by a representative from Momentus and a researcher from Mid Sweden University. The title of this presentation was “Proposal for an Operational Model to Guide Implementations of Enterprises Information Systems”. Its message gave rise to constructive discussions among the participants, who recognized well the addressed managerial issues and regarded the proposed solutions as interesting and relevant. A concrete contact was established with English researchers who experience major challenges in their work with the implementation one of the biggest IS:es ever, conducted within the British health care system. In this context, the message and recommendations from Momentus was greatly appreciated.

The presented model for IS implementation is founded in practical experiences from numerous IS deployments conducted by Momentus consultants, in a number of organizations within and outside of Sweden. This model further empowers Momentus’ capability as a professional partner for businesses and organizations that desire to execute successful implementation of information systems.

The summary, or Abstract, of the presented Research Paper may be found below, while the whole paper may be received via e-mail on a direct request to Momentus.

Proposal for an Operational Model

to Guide Implementations

of Enterprise Information Systems

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a model for Implementation of Information Systems (IS). Its focus is on the organizational aspects of an IS implementation, where the objective is to secure that the to-be IS users will use the to-be IS; hence hardware, software, and other aspects of the information technology itself are not accounted by this model. The key challenge addressed here is the many reported failures of IS implementation as derived from the organizational challenges rather than purely information technology. The proposed model is built on the so-called Organization Information System paradigm that regards an organization and its IS as one conceptual unit rather than considering the IS as an adjunct to the organization – the latter typical for the conventional Management Information System paradigm. Therefore, the IS implementation is contextualised within a process for the development of organizations, and proposes the “Effect-Behavior-Resource-Influence Loop” as a mechanism of change, of the changed organization. In this, it is the influence of the resources – human and machines – that changes the behavior that in turn leads to the change of effects, toward the desired state. Further, the proposed Model for Information System Implementation provides also three needs of an organization to be subjected of an IS intervention; these are the “change Motivation”, the “change Capability”, and the “change Ability”. The proposed model is an outcome of a set of case studies of IS implementation, conducted in an Action Research mode, and informed by selected theoretical bodies as well as the empirical challenge to successfully implement an IS. The key contribution of this model is its empirical experience and its comprehensive approach to an IS implementation, rather than an analytical focusing on a few variables only. However, the proposed model is still in its hypothetical phase of theory development and is in a need of both further cross-fertilization with various heoretical bodies, as well as further empirical experience where validations and modifications are made.
